Tropical Containers

Container specifications
These examples of specifications are intended for use as a guide only.
By ISO definition the outer dimensions of containers must remain the same viz:
lengths: 20' - 40' - 45' width: 8' 0"
height: 8' 6" is normal (except for bolsters).
External dimensions are normally expressed in imperial units (feet and inches) but the tables also give metric specifications. Inner dimensions may vary according to construction e.g.: wall type and thickness etc. which may also influence the tare weight and hence contents weight etc. of the container.
Standard 20'x8'x8'6" dry containers of varying construction may have differences as follows:
- Payload weights: 21660kg-21790kg
- Internal capacity: 33.00m3-33.30m3
- Internal dimensions:
Length: 5890mm-5905mm
Width: 2335mm-2352mm
Height: 2385mm-2401mm
In view of these variations, regard should be had to actual size and weight specifications when designing specialized packaging, calculating container yield etc.
Container packers should ensure that the cargo in a container is packed and secured appropriately including:
- the weight load should be spread evenly throughout the container not packed with the weight at one point being substantially more than at another
- cargo should be properly secured by the appropriate use of dunnage tie-down cables bulkheads etc.
- maximum weights should not be exceeded except by express written permission
- containers must be safe to handle and not endanger lives
- containers have to be able to be carried on the road system so must comply with the road laws of countries involved
